Otherish givers care about benefiting others, and they also have ambitious goals for advancing their own interests. Being otherish means being willing to give more than you receive, and still keeping your own interests in sight, using them as a guide for choosing when, where, how, and to whom you give.

Otherish givers help with no strings attached; they’re just aware not to overextend themselves along the way. They tilt reciprocity in the other direction, preferring to give more than they get.

Otherish givers build up reserves of happiness and meaning so that they can share it.

Otherish givers may appear less altruistic than selfless givers, but their resilience against burnout enables them to contribute more.

Inviting others to bake a bigger pie with me so everyone gets a piece and can continue to expand.

They often consider themselves to be the least intelligent person in the room yet they are the ones that have assembled all the intelligence together for a common purpose.

Otherish givers reject the notion that interdependence is weak. They take on the tasks that are in the group’s best interest, not necessarily their own personal interests. This makes their groups better off.

When they ask for advice, it’s because they’re genuinely interested in learning from others.

How to operate as an otherish giver?

  • Building energy, time and resources for the purpose of giving it away.

  • Think of others alongside my personal goals.

  • Looking at margin as a necessity in order to be available for creativity.

  • Striving to invite others to know themselves so we can give out of our goodness.
